Prior to recordings and radio, the emergence of roots music in America came from European Folk, Africa, and Native American origins and matured into American music such as spirituals, blues, country and gospel. Roots music grew through varied forms in the first three decades of the 20th century. Turning points were the popularization of African-American spirituals, blues, and the birth of country music in the mid to late 1800’s.
